Teacher Training Bursaries and Scholarships Announced for 2025-2026

We are excited to announce that the Department for Education (DfE) has confirmed the financial support available for secondary teacher training during the September 2025 – July 2026 academic year. This support is provided in the form of bursaries and scholarships for prospective teachers in key subjects.

Bursaries Available for Teacher Training

The following bursaries will be available to eligible trainees:

Biology – £26,000

Chemistry – £29,000

Computing – £29,000

English – £5,000

French – £26,000

Geography – £26,000

Maths – £29,000

Music – £10,000

Physics – £29,000

Religious Education – £10,000

Spanish – £26,000

You do not need to apply separately for a bursary. If you meet the eligibility requirements, you will automatically receive it.

Eligibility Criteria for Bursaries:

To be eligible for a bursary, you must have one of the following qualifications:

•A bachelor’s degree with at least a 2:2 (honours)

•A master’s degree

•A PhD

Please note that bursaries are only available for the subjects listed above. Additionally, you must be eligible for student finance to receive a bursary, unless you are training to teach physics or languages.

Scholarships Available for Teacher Training

For trainees in certain subjects, scholarships offer an alternative form of financial support, with higher funding in most cases. The following scholarships are available for eligible trainees:

Chemistry – £31,000

Computing – £31,000

Languages – £28,000

Maths – £31,000

Physics – £31,000

Eligibility Criteria for Scholarships:

To be eligible for a scholarship, you must have one of the following qualifications:

•A bachelor’s degree with at least a 2:1 (honours)

•A master’s degree

•A PhD

In exceptional cases, candidates with a 2:2 degree may still be considered for a scholarship if they have significant relevant experience.

Please be aware that postgraduate teaching scholarships are only available for the subjects listed above. Additionally, you cannot receive both a teaching bursary and a scholarship. Like the bursary, you must also be eligible for student finance to receive a scholarship, unless you are training to teach physics or languages.
