For over 35 years, we have been successfully training teachers in Birmingham. Our Primary SCITT programme offers training across Key Stages 1 and 2 (5-11 year olds) and leads to you achieving Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).
We work in partnership with Teach First to deliver their outstanding School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) program.
Our research-oriented course offers a rich hands-on experience supported by the guidance of highly skilled current educators, enabling you to seamlessly apply your learning to the classroom. You’ll immerse yourself in your training school for four days each week, making a positive impact on students while also participating in weekly training and development sessions dedicated to enhancing your teaching practice.
As this is a school-led programme, you will spend the majority of your time in school learning from excellent practitioners. You will start by observing good practice in your placement school before starting to team teach alongside your school mentor. You will then have the opportunity to deliver solo lessons before you begin your assessed teaching practice on a 50% timetable.
Our programme strikes a harmonious balance between enhancing your subject expertise and fostering a profound understanding of effective teaching methodologies and techniques. This allows you not only to effectively manage your workload but also to safeguard your well-being, supporting you towards becoming an outstanding teacher.
You will complete a two-week induction before starting your school placement. This induction will provide you with the opportunity to meet your peers, begin to engage with key learnings and prepare yourself for starting your core school placement.
Your core school placement will begin after you have completed your two-week induction. We organise your core school placement for you, which will be in one of our partner schools
You will take part in weekly training in the form of seminars, events or self-directed study. This will be complemented by subject focused conferences throughout the year and one weeks intensive training in January and April
In Half Term 3 (January) you will complete a six-week second school placement. We organise your second school placement for you, which will be in one of our partner schools.
You will also have the opportunity to experience special schools and alternative provision schools.
You are required to have a degree as this is a postgraduate programme.
Overseas or equivalent qualifications are accepted. Overseas qualifications need to be confirmed by UK ENIC.
Secondary applicants must prove that they have the required subject knowledge for the subject they wish to teach.
You are required to have a GCSE grade C/4 or above in English.
Please be aware that functional skills level 2 are not equivalent for teacher training.
